Help for young adult orphans in need

Aid program: “At the Crossroads”
Location: Russia

According to Russian statistics, only one in ten young people who leave an orphanage at the age of 18 find a stable path in life. The remaining nine often fall into alcohol and drug abuse, embark on criminal careers, end up in prison, or commit suicide… This is due to traumatic experiences, the absence of family support, and numerous broken relationships and attachments. For many young people, this leads to low frustration tolerance, reduced self-esteem, a continued search for identity, and social-emotional immaturity.

These young people cannot be compared to their peers who have grown up in loving families. In most cases, it takes quite a while before these ‘big kids’ are able to lead an independent, adult life. It is very important that they are not left to face this bridge between adolescence and adulthood alone.

We help young adult orphans in Russia who have fallen on hard times by contributing to the costs of food and accommodation, medical care, legal aid, and counselling in crisis situations. We place particular emphasis on supporting pregnant women and young mothers. Help us to help them!

Here you will find some examples of our aid missions:

Young father Andrej

Andrej from Moscow became a dad at the age of 18. His son Maxim is only 3 months old. Unfortunately, Maxim’s mum has left the family and the baby has stayed with dad.

This is no easy task for a teenager who has spent a large part of his childhood in an orphanage. Maxim’s grandma helps out with some of the care, but she doesn’t have an easy life situation at the moment either.

We have supported the little family and contributed to the costs of baby food and care products for three months.

Young mother Kristina

Kristina grew up in an orphanage in Tomsk, Russia. She became a mother at the age of 17 and is currently looking after her 8-month-old son Vova.

Officially, Kristina is still married, but unfortunately the marriage broke down. The relationship was characterised by alcohol abuse and domestic violence. Fearing for her well-being and that of her son, Kristina decided to leave her husband and move from the countryside to the city.

We supported the small family for 7 months and covered the costs of food and care products.
