Education for orphans

Education for orphans

Program: "Door to the future"

Location: Russia, Ukraine, Germany

For orphans who no longer have a chance of adoption due to their age, a good education is almost the only door to an adequate future. We want to improve educational opportunities for orphan teenagers and young orphan adults in Russia and Ukraine. For this purpose, we contribute, for example, to the costs of support, tutoring, preparation for examinations and vocational guidance for the young people concerned. In addition to learning, the focus is also on promoting independence and self-confidence. With a donation you could support us in this important project work.

Julia wants to study medicine

Julia from the Krasnoyarsk region in Russia had a difficult childhood. After losing her parents, she changed several homes and hospitals. Now at 18 years old, Julia lives in an orphanage and attends the 11th grade.

Julia's goal is to go to medical school. Due to her circumstances, unfortunately she had many gaps in her knowledge. However, she is trying very hard and has already been able to catch up a lot - thanks to individual tutoring. To prepare for the final exams, Julia needs more tutoring.

In early childhood, Julia grew up with her parents and twin brothers. Due to her mother's alcohol abuse, the family broke up and the children were placed in a children's home. At the age of seven Julia had health problems and lived in different hospitals for a long time.

After a while, Julia's mother died and her dad found a new wife. As a result, her father brought Julia back home and it seemed that life was finally improving. However, when Julia was in eighth grade, her father died in a car accident.

For Julia and her brothers, losing their father was very hard. Their stepmother initially took temporary custody of the children, but this proved to be a great challenge. Finally, she gave up and took all three children to a children's home.

After the initial fear, Julia slowly got used to it and was well-received in the orphanage. She received tutoring there from the Russian educational association "Arifmetika Dobra" and finally achieved her first learning success.

"Before, I understood absolutely nothing in math", - Julia tells. But after only 1 year of individual tutoring, she was able to improve her school grades and was thrilled - she can do it after all! The girl started to believe in herself and set herself a big goal: to study medicine.

Julia is currently preparing intensively for her final exams and is receiving tutoring in biology, Russian, mathematics, social studies, and chemistry.

To support Julia in her goal, we would like to collect 500 euros for her. The amount will be used to provide approximately 35 hours of tutoring and individual learning advice.

This delicate girl has experienced a lot in her life, but through hard work, she has already accomplished a lot. Also, we believe that Julia will successfully complete her high school diploma, study medicine, and find her path in life. Please help us to support her in this!

Andrej: staying on the right track

Andrej is 15 years old and comes from the Russian Murmansk region. His foster family gave him up 4 years ago, as they found him much too lively. Since then Andrej lives in a SOS Children's Village in Russia.

He attends school and gets tutoring in Russian and math. In this way, the boy is preparing for his middle school diploma. After that, Andrej would like to start training as a cook - he enjoyed cooking a lot in the foster family. Andrej is a very impulsive teenager, he has to work very hard to make sure everything goes as planned. He needs support in this.

Soon independent life will begin for Andrei, and he is already preparing for it: the boy has made a career choice and is studying responsibly for the entrance exams.

Andrey has a family - a brother and two sisters, but they live far away, in the Arkhangelsk region. Andrei has tried to contact them, but so far has not received any response. However, he does not lose hope to find his relatives and establish a relationship with them.

Andrej is a very lively teenager, he has to work hard to make everything work out as planned. Puberty as well as losing his family twice just make it harder for him. Without tutoring he cannot manage the school program.

This is not because of his laziness, but because the boy finds it very difficult to concentrate on complicated tasks for a long time. Moreover, when the questions about the subjects come up, the tutor is the only person who can help Andrei to find the answers in order to get ahead. The school teachers have no possibility to give individual support to the boy.

We would like to collect 500 euros for Andrej. This money will be used to pay for about 35 tutoring hours and individual learning counseling in a Russian educational association "Arifmetika Dobra", participation in motivational trainings as well as the necessary learning software for the boy. In this way, we would like to support Andrej so that his efforts pay off and he reaches his goal.

Olja's dream of graduating from university

Olja grew up in an orphanage in Russia. After being released, there is usually only one path for the orphaned youth – to train for a simple profession, with little chance of getting a good job.

However, Olja (22 y.o.) did not give up. After being released, she completed and graduated from a vocational pedagogical school and even took up a teaching degree at a university, which she is mastering alongside her work as an after-school caregiver. This is very difficult for her. Olja needs tutoring and learning guidance to achieve her dream of graduating from university.

One might think that Olja's story is a success story. Unfortunately, this cannot be said for sure yet because her story is not over yet. Like almost all children who have grown up in a home, she lacks stability and assertiveness.

Olja is studying at a distance and working as an after-school caregiver at the same time. This is very difficult for her. From her previous life experience, Olja was convinced that she could not achieve much. However, the educators from the Russian educational center "Bolshaya Peremena", who have been accompanying Olja for many years, have helped the gifted girl to believe in herself and step by step to overcome fear and insecurity. Olja has learned to communicate properly and to ask questions without fear of appearing ignorant.

At the moment Olja is getting tutoring in English because her English skills are far below university level. Furthermore, Olja meets regularly with her individual learning advisor, who helps her with practical everyday issues. Olja's life is strictly timed: in the morning - tutoring in "Bolshaya Peremena", at noon - work, in the evening, and on weekends - distance learning.  Without the individual support, Olya would have no chance to cope with this exhausting rhythm of life and the heap of difficulties.

You can see how daring Olja's success is. If she fails, it would not only be a step back. For Olija, it would be the confirmation of her previous experience that she would not be capable of anything. Thanks to her natural intelligence and diligence, Olya has achieved a lot. However, she is not yet stable enough to cope with the big life on her own. The brave girl deserves the help just because she tries so hard to achieve her goal. Olja is a very loving young woman, always helpful and responsible, she donates blood regularly, even in the times of the pandemic.

For understandable reasons, she much prefers to help young children. One might think that Olja is already an adult. But one should not compare such children with their peers who grew up in a family where they experienced love, support, and help from their parents.

At this point, Olja has very different baggage to carry - the experience of loneliness, self-uncertainty, and fear of the future. However, with some help she will manage her way - she will finish her teaching studies and become a teacher. After that, she will be able to give other children the help she once experienced herself.

We want to collect 500 Euros, this amount would enable Olja to have 20 more hours of individual learning counseling and about 50 tutoring hours with the educators of the educational center "Bolshaya Peremena". This help would bring the young courageous woman one step closer to the university degree she is striving for
